Description Fleetguard LF Lube Oil Filter
Lube oil filters are an essential component of the lubrication system of a combustion engine. They remove impurities and contaminants from an engine’s lubricating oil. Think of it kind of like the body’s kidneys. If oil is the lifeblood of the engine, the oil filter purifies it so there is minimal wear and tear. Without a lube oil filter, or with one that is underperforming, the engine’s longevity and performance can be radically reduced. There are several different types of lube oil filters as well as sizes and brands. Before we dive into those, let’s take a look at why you even have a lube oil filter in the first place.
At Fleetguard you can find all your diesel filter needs, not just lube oil. We like to think of ourselves as a one-stop-shop that offers top-quality products coupled with top-tier service. We use better technology, better testing, and better processes to provide you with a better user experience. We are so confident in our products that we offer an industry-leading warranty.

Why Do You Have a Lube Oil Filter
The main reason you have a lube oil filter is to prolong the life and performance of your engine. Prior to 1923, engine’s either didn’t have a filter at all or used metal screens that didn’t work very well. While the 1923 invention of the oil filter was definitely a major breakthrough, innovation struck again in 1954 when the spin-on oil filter came into production. It quickly became popular since it was less messy than the original cartridge style and was easier to replace. Even then, oil filters were not seen as a necessity really until the 1970s. So for many, it begged the question, why do you need a lube oil filter?
Since lube oil is essential to keeping the internal components of a combustion engine moving smoothly and separately, a lube oil filter is essential because it optimizes the overall lubrication process. While some people may visualize the lubrication system (as seen here) as a closed-loop, the reality is that the combustion process creates an opening. Inevitably then, the engine is exposed to contaminants such as:
- Carbon
- Partially Burned Fuel
- Water
- Acids
- Varnish or Lacquers
These could all potentially muck up or erode the engine. Fortunately, when you use the best oil filters, you don’t have to worry about this. This may have you wondering “Are all oil filters the same?” The short answer is no. We take a look at the longer answer in our next sections about types of oil filters.
